The Los Angeles, CA office of Lewis Brisbois, a full-service AmLaw 100 firm, is actively seeking an attorney to join its Civil Rights & Police Litigation Defense Task Force.
The ideal candidate will have at least one (1) to seven (7) years of experience defending public entities, including law enforcement agencies and their officers, in state and federal courts and/or administrative proceedings and at least one (1) year of civil litigation experience. Although trial experience is a bonus, it is not a requirement. Admission to the California Bar is required.
Lewis Brisbois' Civil Rights & Police Litigation Defense Task Force provides a range of litigation defense, and counseling to cities, counties, regional governments, and other public entities. Our team handles the defense of civil rights cases, primarily against law enforcement officers, arising from police uses of force and wrongful death claims – as well as other high-profile, high-stakes, trial-centric civil litigation related to government entities.
Qualified candidates should have some experience in multiple phases of civil litigation, including: drafting responsive pleadings and related motions; preparing written discovery requests/responses and related meet-and-confer letters; taking and defending witness depositions, including thorough preparation of client witnesses for exam; assisting with the preparation of dispositive motions and related exhibits; pre-trial document and motion drafting; and presentation of cases to juries at trial, including openings/closings, witness exam, and/or arguing related motions. Candidates must have strong writing and analytical skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team of exceptional trial attorneys and appellate advocates.
Although we would prefer that you have some experience in public agency and civil rights/constitutional law, we are also interested in working with developing talented attorneys who come to us with excellent skills in any litigation arena as long as they are willing to learn our practice/approach and dedicate themselves to our clients’ interests. If you have substantive litigation experience and are looking for an opportunity in a growing, collaborative firm, we invite you to apply.
We offer competitive compensation and in addition, Lewis Brisbois offers a range of benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401k with employer contribution, and a bonus for those who meet their minimum hourly requirement of 1,950 hours per year. Partial remote work options available.
