Job summary

Durango Police Department is seeking a Police Officer Trainee who will attend the Colorado regional law enforcement academy in August 2027 and progress toward certification. In the academy you will develop knowledge of criminal and judicial processes, the Colorado Criminal Code, patrol and investigation techniques, firearms, driving and arrest control, plus scenario-based training.

After successful completion and POS T certification, you may have the opportunity to advance to Police Officer with

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must hold or be able to obtain a Colorado driver’s license.
• Must meet all P.O.S.T. certificate requirements.
• Must be able to legally possess a firearm.
• Must pass pre-employment and post-offer testing including background, drug screen and psych eval.

Responsibilities

• Attend all scheduled days of basic law enforcement academy training.
• Successfully complete the academy and obtain P.O.S.T. certification in Colorado.
• Learn and adhere to Durango Police Department policies and procedures.
• Develop understanding of criminal and case law for patrol situations.
• Maintain proper radio procedures and CPR/first aid certifications.
• Become proficient with the Spillman records system.
