The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) has openings for police officers year-round. The Department also fills non-sworn positions as needed.

1. Candidates must pass a reading comprehension test. This test is administered regularly throughout the year at the Alexander R. Beaty Public Safety Training and Support Center. Candidates need to sign up for an available testing date to start the application process.

General Definition of Work

Performs responsible protective service work in the prevention, detection, and investigation of law violations.

Essential Functions

On an assigned shift, patrols designated areas to observe violations of laws, suspicious activities, and disturbances; responds to dispatch calls; makes arrests; provides escorts; directs traffic; investigates accidents; assists injured individuals; reports unsafe conditions; conducts criminal investigations; prepares reports; testifies in court; and performs related duties.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalency.

Special Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must have good moral character, with no felony convictions, serious misdemeanors, or DWI's within the past five years.
• Must be in good physical condition.
• Must reside within 60 miles of City Hall.
• Must possess or obtain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Additional Information

Work Schedule: Rotating/Shift Hours.

There is a 12-month probationary period with performance evaluations at 6 months and at the end of probation.
