Job description

Police Officer Position - Job Description

This is a lateral Police Officer position. Only candidates meeting all minimum qualifications, including at least 24 months of recent law enforcement experience within the last 36 months, will be considered.

Oral boards are conducted on the fourth Thursday of each month. Qualified applicants will be invited to interview, and those with passing scores will be added to a continuous eligibility list, valid for six months.

Summary of Duties

Performs law enforcement functions to maintain public peace, protect life and property, prevent crime, apprehend violators, and enforce laws and ordinances of Mukilteo and Washington.

  1. Patrols assigned areas by car, foot, bicycle, or motorcycle; responds to various calls involving accidents, crimes, and disturbances.
  2. Conducts investigations, interviews witnesses and victims, collects evidence, prepares reports, and testifies in court.
  3. Enforces traffic laws, operates radar, directs traffic, and issues citations.
  4. Investigates traffic accidents to determine causes.
  5. Apprehends violators, including arrest procedures and potential use of force.
  6. Engages in community outreach, patrols problem areas, and maintains department image.
  7. Performs additional duties like transporting prisoners and serving warrants.
Minimum Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • At least 21 years old at application
  • Valid driver's license; must obtain Washington license within 30 days
  • Proficient in English; high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Pass physical, aptitude, and job performance tests
  • Basic Certification by Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission and Peace Officer Certification, or equivalent
  • Active law enforcement in past 24 months; completed probationary period
  • Pass psychological, truth detection, and health examinations; drug screening
  • Clean driving and criminal records; no felony convictions
  • Other requirements per Mukilteo Civil Service Rules
Peripheral Duties

Follow-up investigations, parking enforcement, community talks, warrant service, and administrative tasks.

Working Conditions

Primarily in patrol vehicle, in various weather conditions, requiring physical stamina and ability to handle stressful situations, including physical confrontations and high-stress scenarios.
