Police Officer (Full-Time)

Police Department

Salary: $22.65* - $37.37 Hourly / $49,467.60* - $81,616.08 Annually

FLSA Position Class: Non-Exempt

Work Schedule: 12-Hour Shifts Permanent Days or Permanent Night Shifts

*Starting Pay is based on relevant experience as a Sworn Law Enforcement Officer

Pay Incentives for Sworn Law Enforcement Officers include:
  • 5% Pay Increase after successfully completing a 6-month probationary period
  • Educational Incentives for work-related degrees (3% per degree level up to 9%)
  • Shift Differentials ($2.00/hr for night shift 6PM–6AM, $1.00/hr for Mid Shift Noon to Midnight)
  • Specialized Unit Incentive Pay (5% while assigned to specialized units such as SRT, K-9, CID, Traffic)
  • Intermediate & Advanced Law Enforcement Certification (up to 6%)
  • Specialized Training Certifications (up to 6%)
  • Bilingual Incentive Pay (5%)
  • Take Home Vehicles within 30 miles of City Limits
  • Holiday Overtime Pay for eligible 12-hour shift employees, calculated at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate, paid in the pay period the holiday occurs
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be at least 20 years old
  • High school graduate or GED
  • Of good moral character
  • Successfully completed BLET and passed the state exam
  • Satisfactorily completed the agency’s firearms training
  • Have no disqualifying criminal record, including felonies or certain misdemeanors within specified timeframes
  • Fingerprint clearance and criminal record check
  • Physical and psychological examinations with negative results
  • Personal interview with department representatives
  • Notify the department of any criminal offenses after employment
Job Overview:

Performs a variety of police duties under supervision, including patrol, responding to calls, testifying, operating equipment, investigating crimes, conducting searches, and more. Must be able to perform all functions unassisted and at a high physical level.

Note: This description is not all-inclusive; employees may perform other duties as needed.

Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic Law Enforcement Certification from North Carolina
Requirements:
  • U.S. citizen, at least 20 years old
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 60 days of moving to NC
  • Meet minimum experience and training qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of police procedures and city geography
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions, communicate effectively, analyze situations, and operate firearms and vehicles
Physical Activity Requirements:

Heavy work involving exertion of up to 100 pounds, with activities like climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Good vision, hearing, speaking, and strength required.

Working Conditions:

Indoor and outdoor environments, including extreme weather, hazards, and exposure to chemicals and biological materials. May require night, weekend, or emergency shifts.
