The Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for one Police Officer in the Police Service located in Long Beach, CA.

Police Officers carry out responsibilities primarily on Veterans Affairs Departmental properties, including any properties owned, leased, or licensed to VA.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining safety and security on VA properties
  • Enforcing laws and regulations
  • Responding to emergencies and incidents
  • Conducting patrols and investigations
  • Other law enforcement duties as assigned
Requirements

  • Designated and/or random drug testing may be required
  • May serve a probationary period
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • A complete application package including Resume, Transcripts, etc.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process
  • Attend an 8-10 week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas (if not already completed). Satisfactory completion of this course is a condition of employment.
  • A character investigation will be conducted on selected applicants to assess honesty, integrity, character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.
  • Must qualify to be issued a firearm semi-annually and annually with an expandable Straight Baton (MEB). Must be able to possess firearms under the Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(9)).
  • Maintain a valid State or Commonwealth Driver's License and pass annual physical and psychosocial assessments.
  • Meet medical requirements: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear conversational voice. Position involves moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or hazardous duties.
  • Must perform essential functions safely, possessing emotional and mental stability. A psychological examination is required.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to GS-05) involving knowledge of laws, regulations, law enforcement operations, and responsibilities related to maintaining order and protecting life and property. Such experience may include work on a police force, military police, law enforcement in parks or natural resource environments, criminal investigations, or similar roles.

Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer work, and service through programs like Peace Corps or AmeriCorps. Volunteer work counts towards experience to build skills and competencies.

Note: A full year of work is considered 35-40 hours per week. Part-time experience is credited proportionally. Applicants should specify duties, responsibilities, and hours worked.
