Job summary

The City of Grapevine Police Department seeks an experienced Public Information Officer to lead public communications, media relations, and community outreach. You will produce and monitor communications for the department, advise on digital content, and act as the department's public spokesperson at events.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree, 2+ years of media/public safety experience, and the ability to work irregular hours.

Job description

Responsible for Police Department communications to the public, media and other organizations. Produces and monitors communications for the Department, including Community Relations Unit programs, Community Outreach Center programs, traffic safety campaigns, press releases, reports and other general department communications. This position is considered part of the Department's command staff and is assigned to the Office of Chief of Police.

• 1. Works under minimum supervision with significant latitude given in making decisions regarding the department's communication efforts.
• 2. Creates and implements robust interactive communication that engages the community across various formats.
• 3. Coordinates and produces publications, newsletters, reports and other documents directly.
• 4. Advises staff on digital content, including website and social media networks, to be more effective as an information tool.
• 5. Responsible for internal communications within the Department and City, including newsletters, annual reports, and other publications.
• 6. Acts as the Department's public spokesperson in Department events.
• 7. Develops a communication strategy for the Department.
• 8. Keeps all digital communication current, including websites and social media.
• 9. Ensures a unified message is conveyed from the Department.
• 10. Maintains communication and crisis plans for the Department
• 11. Supervises part-time media staff, including scheduling, content review, and training.
• 12. Manages online retail services from the Department.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

• Must be available to work irregular hours.
• Must be proficient with assorted technology and computer software, i.e. Microsoft office, Apple Products, and scanning equipment.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, business administration or similar degree or a criminal justice degree from an accredited college or university with at least two (2) years of experience working with media, media outlets, and/or for a public safety agency in the role of a Public Information Officer (PIO) preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Experience in public sector communication preferred.

Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check and credit check. Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.

Due to Criminal Justice Information Security (CJIS) requirements, the candidate must never have been convicted, put on court-ordered community supervision, or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order. Class A Misdemeanor Conviction, Deferred Adjudication, or Felony Conviction are permanent disqualifiers.

Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
