Salary: $37,845.00 annually

A Police Cadet receives training in law enforcement practices and procedures. This role has no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Employees work rotating shifts, including evening, weekend, and holiday hours. Work is performed in an office where normal working conditions are encountered and requires minimal physical exertion.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.
• Have a valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver’s license or an equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
• Have a valid Maryland ID or an equivalent out-of-state government‑issued ID acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
• Be a United States citizen, or a permanent legal resident who is an honorably discharged veteran with a pending citizenship application.
• Be at least 17 years and 6 months old at the time of appointment, but not older than 21 years of age.
• Undergo fingerprinting, Federal, State, and local fingerprint checks, background investigation, physical and agility tests, polygraph, and psychological examinations.
• Not have any criminal convictions or current proceedings that would disqualify the applicant, including felony or serious misdemeanor convictions; misdemeanor convictions must be expunged; no arrest for DUI within the past 5 years; no current domestic violence court orders; no dishonorable military discharge.
• Have no more than 3 points on a driver’s license.
• Have not illegally used a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana within the past year.
• Be 18 years of age upon beginning the Cadet Program.
• Applicants need not be a Maryland resident.
• Work in the Cadet Program requires rotation and shift work as noted above.

Police Cadets who successfully complete the program are required to enter the first available entry level training class as a Police Officer Trainee at the Professional Development and Training Academy upon reaching 20 years and 6 months of age. Failure to enter the PDTA as a Police Officer Trainee upon reaching this threshold will result in termination of employment.
