Job summary

The City of South Gate is seeking a non-sworn trainee to attend the Basic Police Academy. Under general supervision, you will participate in classroom instruction on police policies, procedures, and field exercises with the goal of graduation and progression to Police Officer.

The program emphasizes discipline, physical fitness, and the ability to work with diverse communities. Eligibility includes high school graduation, a valid California driver’s license, and legal authorization to work in

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school.
• California Class C driver's license and proof of insurance.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Must be 21 years of age at the time of application.
• English/Spanish bilingual skills highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Attends Academy classroom instruction on police policies, procedures, weaponless defense, criminal and civil law, physical fitness techniques, use of firearms, arrest procedures, community relations, operation of emergency vehicles and other mandated courses and related subjects.
• Participates in field exercises and physical training routines; keeps and writes notebooks, reports, and other printed material and records; aims for Police Academy graduation and eventual meaningful service to the Police Department.
