Job summary

Hennepin Healthcare's Poison Center seeks a Pharmacy Technician or equivalent to provide emergency information and initial treatment guidance by phone for non-toxic exposures, under physician supervision. The role also involves promoting public poison prevention education and ensuring accurate case documentation.

The position supports a 0.6 FTE schedule (48 hours per pay period), in-person work at the Downtown Campus, with day/evening shifts and weekend rotation.

Qualifications

  • 2 years of college education (health and/ or science related studies preferred)
  • Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program, or Licensed Practical Nurse Program, Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Program
  • -OR- An approved equivalent combination of education and experience
  • -AND- LICENSES/ CERTIFICATIONS - TBD

Responsibilities

  • Promotes positive customer relations in dealing with patients, visitors, and other employees
  • Responds to telephone calls from the public regarding nontoxic or minor poison exposures: determine the type and severity of each exposure; and recommends initial first aid and treatment advice per poison center guidelines
  • Responds to telephone calls requesting tablet identification, basic poison information and poison prevention questions
  • Performs follow-up calls
  • Accurately records medical case information utilizing computerized data collection software
  • Participates in case review and quality assurance activities
  • Provides public poison prevention education
  • Participates in training of new poison information providers
  • Completes special projects as assigned
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department team to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives
  • Responsible for all intradepartmental communication by staff meeting or in-service attendance and information sent by email. Maintains a working knowledge of the poison center policy and procedure manual
  • Acts consistently with all HRPC policies, procedures and clinical guidelines and refers all calls outside the scope of their position
