Position Overview
We are seeking a Plumbing Design Engineer / Drafter / Detailer to support the design, drafting, detailing, and coordination of plumbing systems for commercial construction projects.
This position will be responsible for developing plumbing plans, shop drawings, specifications, and coordinated 3D models from contract documents and project requirements. The ideal candidate has strong plumbing knowledge, proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit, and the ability to translate design documents into accurate, detailed, and constructible plumbing drawings.
This role requires someone who can work independently while collaborating closely with engineering, project management, coordination, and construction teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and draft plumbing plans, layouts, and specifications for commercial construction projects.
- Prepare detailed plumbing shop drawings based on contract documents, engineering drawings, and project specifications.
- Create and modify plumbing drawings, including layouts, dimensions, elevations, sections, details, and equipment locations.
- Develop coordinated 3D models for plumbing and piping systems.
- Review and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and plumbing construction documents.
- Coordinate plumbing systems with structural, mechanical, electrical, architectural, and other building systems.
- Identify potential clashes, space constraints, and constructability issues before installation.
- Incorporate design revisions, RFIs, field conditions, coordination changes, and project updates into drawings and models.
- Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
- Assist with developing plumbing plans and specifications throughout the design and construction process.
- Coordinate piping routes, equipment locations, penetrations, sleeves, and other installation requirements.
- Work closely with Project Managers, engineers, field personnel, and other project team members to resolve design and coordination issues.
- Participate in design, BIM, and project coordination meetings as required.
- Maintain organized drawing files, models, revisions, and project documentation.
- Manage multiple projects and changing priorities while meeting established deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge and/or professional experience with plumbing systems and commercial construction.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD.
- Proficiency with Revit.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, engineering documents, and project specifications.
- Understanding of plumbing layouts, piping systems, and construction detailing.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy.
- Strong analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to identify design and coordination conflicts and develop practical solutions.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with project teams.
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- California Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
- Experience with CADmep / CADDMECH.
- Experience with QuickPen.
- Experience designing and detailing piping systems.
- Experience with plumbing fabrication and construction detailing.
- Experience developing plumbing plans and specifications for commercial construction projects.
- Experience producing shop drawings for field installation and fabrication.
- Experience working within a mechanical or plumbing contracting environment.
- BIM coordination experience is highly desirable.
