Job summary

City of Houston is seeking a Plumbing/Code Enforcement Inspector to enforce codes and inspect tunnels, manholes, and new construction for compliance. The role includes issuing notices, meeting with contractors and the public, and maintaining inspection records with photos.

Requires a High School Diploma or GED and 2 years of related inspection experience; Texas driver’s license may be required. Spanish fluency is a plus.

Qualifications

• Requires High School Diploma or GED and up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection.
• Two years of journey level or skilled experience related to the area of inspection to be performed are required.
• May require a valid Texas Driver's License and be in compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).
• The following certificates/licenses are preferred to be obtained within 11 months of employment in the area of inspection to be performed: Licensed by the State Board of Plumbing Examiners; and, ICBO or IAPMO Plumbing Inspector Certificate.
• Preference will be given to applicants who: fluency in Spanish.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates enforcement of codes, ordinances and specifications for nonstructural plumbing facilities, structures and systems to ensure conformance with plans and specifications.
• Prepares, conducts and reviews inspections for compliance with plans and specifications, identifies problems areas and recommends solutions.
• Prepares and serves correction notices and may serve violation citations; meets with the public, contractors, professionals and businesses to respond to inquiries.
• Performs daily record keeping, documentation and photographs during inspections.
• Researches plumbing plans, prepares technical reports and submits them.
• Investigates unpermitted work and assists supervisor with special tasks as assigned.
