Job description

Under general supervision, plumbing includes the work and/or practice, materials, fixtures used in the installation, removal, maintenance, extension, and modification of a plumbing system. This includes all piping, fixtures, fixed appliances, and appurtenances related to sanitary drainage, storm drainage, special wastes, venting systems, and public or private water supply systems. Working knowledge of chilled water and hot water supply and returns is also mandatory. Perform routine maintenance and respond to alarms and emergency calls related to mechanical systems and utilities, including life support systems such as oxygen, medical air, and vacuum.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Responding to emergency and trouble calls throughout the hospital.
  2. Installing and repairing plumbing throughout the campus, including piping, valves, faucets, fixtures, and drains.
  3. Performing functions of a gas-fitter, steam-fitter, and sprinkler-fitter as needed.
  4. Proficiently assembling and installing various plumbing materials such as iron, steel, glass, copper, and plastic.
  5. Sorting, soldering, silver soldering, and caulking joints.
  6. Knowledge of threading tools.
  7. Installing and maintaining oxygen, vacuum, and air systems.
  8. Completing daily work records.
  9. Being subject to call anytime for emergencies and responding to problems of all trades during off-shift hours as required.
  10. Directing the work of plumber's assistants or apprentices.
  11. Performing routine preventive maintenance tasks.
  12. Responding to emergency calls or alarms, repairing problems, or making referrals.
  13. Functioning as a work order coordinator, answering phones, dispatching calls, and creating work orders.
  14. Monitoring and/or operating systems such as campus alarms, Translogic tube systems, Honeywell and Andover building automation, fire alarm systems, and other automated systems.
  15. Accepting responsibility as a charge person in the absence of a supervisor.
  16. Performing special projects and outside grounds duties as assigned.
  17. Assisting in operations by answering phones, dispatching calls, monitoring alarm systems, and making temperature/humidity adjustments via automation.
  18. Responding to problems across trades such as carpentry, locksmithing, electrical, and HVAC as needed.
  19. Assisting with clearing snow and spreading snow melt during weather events to keep entryways and exits open.

Education
Trade/Technical/Vocational Diploma in Plumbing preferred.
Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No.

Licenses and Credentials
Journeyman Plumber [State License] - preferred
Master Plumber [State License] - preferred
ASSE 6010 Installer Certified (NITC) - preferred
ASME IX Brazer Certification/Medical Gas Brazer - preferred
Wastewater Treatment Operator [Massachusetts] - preferred
Personal Driver's License (New Hampshire) - preferred
NFPA Hot Work Certificate

Experience
Completion of a three-year apprentice program in plumbing plus 1-2 years of formal training; 2-3 years required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read blueprints, knowledge of Massachusetts plumbing codes, physical strength to carry tools and equipment, ability to work overtime, and occasionally lift over seventy pounds.
