Job Summary
To assemble, install, and repair piping, fixtures, and equipment used in the distribution and drainage of water and water-carried wastes, air, gas, steam, heating water, and chilled water, under low or high pressure.
Responsibilities*
- Install, inspect, and repair water mains, service lines, sewer lines, air and gas lines, valves, gauges, pumps, and fixtures, including sinks, dishwashers, water heaters, toilets, urinals, footbaths, and disposals.
- Install, inspect, and repair steam, condensate, and water lines, equipment, radiators, traps, valves, pumps, gauges, controls, fittings, and accessories.
- Cut pipe and thread, using threading machine or other mechanical methods, and bend pipe by hand or with pipe-bending machine.
- Assemble and install pipe and pipefittings of various materials including brass, cast-iron, copper, lead, glass, and plastic.
- Join piping by threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused, pressed, cemented, or welded joints.
- Cut or bore through walls, ceilings, or partitions.
- Test piping systems for leaks using gauges.
- Secure pipes to structures with clamps, brackets, and hangers.
- Unplug clogged drains, pipes, and fixtures using a drain snake.
- Install and maintain boilers, refrigeration, and air-conditioning systems.
- Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications.
- Install, repair, and maintain fire protection systems.
- Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.
Required Qualifications*
- Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current Journey Plumber’s license and backflow certification, maintained throughout employment.
- Extensive knowledge of methods, equipment, and materials used in installation and repair of domestic water, steam, heating, chilled water systems, and fixtures.
- Experience in installation and repair of water distribution systems and fixtures.
- Skill in operating plumbing tools, power equipment, and machinery.
- Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others.
- Knowledge of plumbing codes.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
- Capability to perform duties in high elevations, confined spaces, behind obstacles, underground, and inside or outside buildings.
- Knowledge of underground water mains, drain pipes, valves, pits, separators, and structures.
- Knowledge of steam, hydronic, chemical treatment, and process piping systems.
- Adherence to safety precautions when operating tools and machinery.
- Understanding of maintenance requirements for various piping and fixture systems.
- Must be able to drive a university vehicle.
Desired Qualifications*
- Master Plumber’s license.
- 6010 Medical gas certification.
- 4-6 years of fire suppression system experience.
- Knowledge of NFPA standards and FM standards related to fire suppression.
- Experience with wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge sprinkler systems.
- Proficiency with computer applications, including data entry, research, email, and document management.
- Effective communication and customer service skills across diverse organizational levels.
- Experience with specialty fire suppression systems like Halon and CO2.
- Knowledge of CMMS and Google Cloud or similar technologies.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
- Experience working in healthcare, maintenance, or construction environments.
- Ability to work with an automatic work order system.
- Exceptional communication and teamwork skills.
- Candidate should ensure installations meet codes and standards.
- Willingness to transport tools, move equipment, travel across large facilities, and drive department vehicles.
- Frequent movement and positioning required for daily tasks.
Licensure & Certification
- Current Michigan Journey Plumber’s license.
- ASSE Backflow Certification.
- Michigan Master Plumber’s license.
- 6010 Medical Gas Certification.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 7 am - 3:30 pm, with potential overtime and on-call duties for emergencies.
