Job summary

The University of Arizona is seeking a qualified plumber to support Housing & Residential Life. This full-time, on-site role performs skilled plumbing work in university dormitories, including installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of complex systems.

A valid driver’s license and a journeyman license are preferred; Backflow Tester certification is a plus. Salary range provided with full benefits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience or equivalent education/training.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive per University Fleet Safety Policy.
• Journeyman plumber license or certification preferred.
• Backflow Tester certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs journeyman level installation, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of commercial and institutional plumbing systems.
• Diagnoses and resolves complex plumbing issues affecting buildings and infrastructure.
• Troubleshoots system failures, leaks, pressure issues, and equipment malfunctions.
• Responds to emergency service calls and restores systems with minimal disruption.
• Inspects valves, pumps, boilers, water heaters, fixtures, and other components; repairs/replaces as needed.
• Performs planned maintenance including valves exercise, fixture rebuilding, and cleaning drinking fountains.
• Tests and repairs backflow assemblies.
• Maintains safety, workmanship, professionalism, and customer service.
• Represents Housing & Residential Life with a professional appearance and public relations.
• Communicates with residents, staff, supervisors, contractors, and other trades to coordinate work.
• Participates in Housing Emergency On-Call Program.

Job description

The University is seeking a qualified plumber to support Housing & Residential Life. This position reports to the Shop Superintendent, performs highly skilled level plumbing work involving the installation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of complex commercial and institutional plumbing systems in the student dorms. This position requires expert knowledge of plumbing codes, mechanical room systems, specialty valves, and related equipment, with the ability to diagnose issues ranging from routine service calls to large-scale system failures. The role operates independently, provides technical guidance to others as needed, and ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Housing & Residential Life (Housing), a self-funded auxiliary housed within Campus Life at the University of Arizona, operates 23 dorms and 1 graduate apartment complex that house over 7,800 students annually on the University of Arizona Main Campus. More than 80% of on-campus residents are first-year students. Our dorms range in style from historic to modern and range in size from 60 to 1000 residents. While the University does not require students to live on campus, more than 70% of all incoming first-year students choose to live in UA housing to help their transition to university life.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Performs journeyman level installation, inspection, testing,preventative maintenance and repair of commercial and institutional plumbingsystems, including domestic hot and cold water, sanitary sewer, drainage, gaspiping, fixtures, and mechanical room equipment (steam).
• Diagnoses and resolves complex plumbing issues affectingbuildings and infrastructure.
• Independently troubleshoots system failures, leaks, pressureissues, and equipment malfunctions.
• Responds to emergency service calls, assess risk, implementcorrective actions, and restore systems to operational condition with minimaldisruption.
• Inspects joints, valves, pumps, boilers, water heaters,sinks, commodes, tanks, and other plumbing system components to locatemalfunctions; repairs and replaces as necessary.
• Performs periodic planned maintenance work as requiredincluding but not limited to exercising valves, rebuilding fixtures, cleaningdrinking fountains, and testing drains.
• Performs inspection, maintenance, and repairs of fireextinguishing systems, including standard testing of related building firesafety equipment.
• Tests and repairs backflow assemblies.
• Serves as a role model for safety, workmanship,professionalism, and customer service.
• Maintain a clean appearance and positive public relationswhile representing Housing & Residential Life.
• Communicates professionally with building residents, staff,supervisors, contractors, and other trades to coordinate work activities.
• Participates in Housing Emergency On-Call Program.
• Performs related duties as assigned or required to meetHousing & Residential Life goals and objectives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of the tools, testing equipment, and materialscommon to the plumbing trade.
• Knowledge of applicable plumbing codes and safety standards,with the ability to interpret and apply blueprints, drawings, and technicaldocumentation.
• Knowledge of the mechanical operation of equipment such aspumps, boilers, heaters, and other plumbing components.
• Skill in the installation, repair, and maintenance of alltypes of plumbing systems.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or high school equivalency is required.
• Minimumof 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education,technical training, apprenticeship training, and relevant experience thatdemonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .

Preferred Qualifications

• Journeyman plumber license or certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Backflow Tester certified.
