Job Description: Plumber/Steamfitter at Eskenazi Health

Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off the downtown campus, including various Eskenazi Health Center sites throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Plumber/Steamfitter performs preventative maintenance by inspecting plumbing and steam heating systems and replacing potentially defective parts.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  1. Contribute to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach, and Serve, emphasizing care for the vulnerable population of Marion County. Model values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development, and Excellence.
  2. Check for repairs, stoppages, leaks in waste lines, water lines, vent, steam, and return lines to ensure proper operation.
  3. Perform preventative maintenance by inspecting plumbing and steam heating systems and replacing defective parts.
  4. Repair and install plumbing fixtures, including wash basins, sinks, toilets, valves, faucets, water heaters, piping, and insulation.
  5. Replace and repair worn or defective parts on kitchen equipment like kettles, dishwashers, and disposals.
  6. Inspect and service sump pumps, replace worn parts, and correct misalignments.
  7. Install and maintain vacuum, oxygen, nitrogen, sterilizer, control, and nitrous oxide lines.
  8. Install and maintain automatic fire protection sprinkler systems.
  9. Maintain competencies specific to department, area, and unit requirements.
Job Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED), plus completion of a 4-year approved plumbing and steamfitting apprenticeship, and 2 years of certified shop work as a plumber/steamfitter.
  • Alternatively, a minimum of 6 years of related work experience in a commercial or industrial setting may substitute for formal education.
  • On-the-job training provided as determined by the Supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of state and local plumbing codes.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions effectively.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and work from them.
  • Proficient use of plumbing and steamfitting tools such as pipe cutters, threading equipment, and wrenches.
  • Ability to work from ladders and scaffolds.
  • Skills in soldering, brazing, and welding.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mathematical knowledge and application.
  • Ability to use age-appropriate communication skills and techniques.
