Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off the Eskenazi Health downtown campus, including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites throughout Indianapolis.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Role Summary: The Plumber/Steamfitter performs preventative maintenance by inspecting plumbing and steam heating systems and replacing potentially defective parts.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach, and Serve, with emphasis on Marion County's vulnerable population. Models Eskenazi Health values of Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development, and Excellence.
  2. Checks for repairs, stoppages, breaks, and leaks in waste lines, water lines, vents, steam, and return lines to ensure proper operation and maintenance.
  3. Performs preventative maintenance by inspecting plumbing and steam heating systems and replacing defective parts.
  4. Repairs and installs plumbing fixtures such as wash basins, sinks, toilets, valves, faucets, pressure regulator valves, water heaters, piping, and insulation.
  5. Replaces and repairs worn or defective parts on kitchen equipment, including kettles, dishwashers, and garbage disposals.
  6. Removes and inspects sump pumps, replaces worn parts, repacks glands, and corrects misalignments.
  7. Installs and maintains vacuum, oxygen, nitrogen, sterilizer, control, and nitrous oxide lines.
  8. Installs and maintains automatic fire protection sprinkler systems.
  9. Maintains age-specific and job-specific competencies as per department/area/unit requirements.

Job Requirements:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED), plus completion of a 4-year approved plumbing and steamfitting apprenticeship program, and 2 years of shop work as a certified plumber/steamfitter.
  2. Minimum of 6 years of related work experience as a commercial or industrial plumber/steamfitter may substitute for education/training requirements.
  3. On-the-job training provided as determined by the Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of state and local plumbing codes.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions effectively.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and work from them.
  • Proper use of plumbing and steamfitting tools, such as pipe cutters, threading equipment, and wrenches.
  • Ability to work from ladders and scaffolds.
  • Ability to solder, braze, and weld.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and application of mathematics.
  • Ability to use age-appropriate communication skills.
