Job summary

Whatnot is seeking a Backend Engineer for the Seller Growth Platform to design and build the core systems that power the new seller funnel. You will focus on IDV, fraud detection, and trust/risk reviews to safeguard buyers while enabling scalable seller growth.

You will work across the stack (Python/Elixir/JavaScript) with a track record of delivering features quickly. This role supports flexible work from home or in one of our hub offices (LA, NY, SF, Seattle) with proximity requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience.
• Experience building scalable systems (we primarily use Python, Elixir, JavaScript).
• Ability to work across the stack (backend and frontend).
• Excellent product instincts. You first think about users rather than the best technical solution.
• Proven track record of delivering features. You are known for shipping products and features lightning‑fast.

Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable systems at the heart of the seller funnel (IDV, fraud detection, trust reviews).
• Balance growth with trust and safety to scale thousands of new sellers weekly.
• Develop platform intelligence to route sellers to onboarding and discovery paths.
• Create reusable trust and reputation systems and modular fraud prevention frameworks.
