Job summary

Pearson is seeking a principal engineer to lead the platform's technical direction and hands‑on delivery. You will design target systems, migrate large‑scale content and data, and build shared capabilities exposed through APIs.

You will stay hands‑on while raising the engineering bar and guiding teams across Pearson's platform. You will work with senior engineers, product managers, and architects to balance speed, scalability, and safety, including AI‑powered workflows.

Qualifications

• 12+ years building and operating production software, including 4+ years at staff or principal level or as technical lead across multiple teams.
• Led a re-platforming or legacy migration of a production system with active users and data.
• Full-stack depth in Java and Spring Boot, Node.js/TypeScript, React, with MongoDB and event-driven services (SQS, SNS, Kafka).
• Production experience on AWS (ECS Fargate, Lambda, S3, API Gateway), observability (New Relic, CloudWatch), CI/CD (GitHub Actions), and IaC (Terraform).
• Writes clear design documents and migration plans and communicates tradeoffs to engineering, product, and executives.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical plan and delivery for several tracks, including consolidations and migrations, from target design through launch.
• Migrate large volumes of content and data with verification for downstream products.
• Build shared capabilities exposed via clean APIs and uphold security and stability across apps.
• Provide costed views of technical debt and prioritize fixes.
• Act as technical point of contact for escalated incidents and drive root cause and fixes.
• Define standards across teams for patterns, reliability, observability, performance, and safe AI-powered workflows.
• Review designs, mentor engineers, and drive engineering practices to scale ownership.
• Lead the long-term technical roadmap for your area.
