Job summary

Pearson seeks a hands-on principal engineer to modernize our content platform and lead large-scale migrations. You will design target systems, move content and users safely, and drive architecture across UI, workflows, AI, back-end services, and cloud infrastructure.

You will write production code on critical paths, mentor teams, and own the long-term technical roadmap while aligning with leadership priorities. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role within Pearson's PSG-CP group.

Qualifications

• 12+ years building and operating production software, incl. 4+ years at staff or principal level.
• Led a re-platforming or legacy migration of a production system with active users and data.
• Led the design and delivery of technically complex, user-facing systems.
• Upgraded or migrated production systems off an end-of-life runtime or framework.
• Full-stack depth in Java/Spring Boot, Node.js/TypeScript, and React with MongoDB and event-driven services.
• Production experience on AWS (ECS Fargate, Lambda, S3, API Gateway) with observability, CI/CD, and IaC.
• Writes clear design documents and migration plans; influences without authority.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical plan and delivery for several tracks from design through launch.
• Migrate large volumes of content and data with verification of integrity.
• Build shared capabilities exposed via clean APIs.
• Provide costed views of technical debt and prioritize fixes.
• Act as technical point of contact for escalated incidents.
• Ensure security and stability: upgrades, vulnerability remediation, disaster recovery.
• Set standards across teams for design, tooling, reliability, performance.
• Lead long-term technical roadmaps and domain expertise.
• Write production code on critical paths and review hard changes.
• Collaborate with managers, architects, and QEs to balance long-term goals.
