Job summary

Averro is seeking a Senior Backend Platform Engineer to design, build, and operate production backend systems powering a next-generation AI platform. This role focuses on owning platform components from integrations to data ingestion, messaging, and orchestration, delivering reliable and scalable solutions.

You will collaborate with AI Engineering and Product teams to translate evolving requirements into robust software, drive observability, and mentor engineers while shaping platform-wide

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering with backend platform focus.
• Proven track record delivering significant backend systems in production.
• Experience deploying and operating scalable production backends.
• Strong Python skills with FastAPI, Celery, and async/queue-based architectures.
• Deep PostgreSQL experience: schema design, queries, and production ops.
• Experience with large datasets and resolving data quality issues.
• Experience designing integrations with SaaS providers, handling rate limits and partial failures.
• Strong AWS/cloud and distributed systems experience.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, OpenAI Codex).
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration.
• Ability to work autonomously within architectural direction.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end delivery of backend platform components from design to production.
• Lead work in integrations, messaging, data ingestion, or core platform services.
• Make technical decisions on data modeling, APIs, error handling, and ops.
• Partner with AI Eng and Product teams to deliver reliable, scalable software.
• Improve reliability, performance, and observability in production systems.
• Respond to production issues and lead remediation efforts.
• Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through code reviews and design feedback.
• Contribute to platform-wide design discussions and standards.
• Build and support integration platforms and data processing pipelines.
• Develop messaging infrastructure for email, SMS, and chat delivery pipelines.
• Design scalable Postgres schemas for transactional workloads and AI retrievals.
• Develop event-driven workflows with asynchronous services and queues.

Role & Responsibilities

Our client is seeking a Senior Backend Platform Engineer to design, build, and operate the production backend systems that power a next-generation AI platform. This is an experienced individual contributor role focused on owning and delivering meaningful pieces of the platform layer including integrations, data ingestion, messaging infrastructure, orchestration, and foundational data systems supporting AI agents and automation workflows.

Responsibilities include:

• Own end-to-end delivery of significant backend platform components, taking work from design through production within an established architectural direction
• Lead implementation in focused domains such as integrations, messaging infrastructure, data ingestion, or core platform services
• Make day-to-day technical decisions within assigned domains including data modeling, API design, error handling, and operational considerations
• Partner closely with AI Engineering and Product teams to translate evolving requirements into reliable, scalable, and well-tested software solutions
• Drive reliability, performance, and observability improvements in production systems
• Respond to production issues and lead troubleshooting and remediation efforts
• Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and collaborative engineering practices
• Contribute to platform-wide design discussions and influence engineering standards and best practices
• Build and support integration platforms including inbound/outbound data processors, APIs, webhook ingestion, CSV bulk imports, synchronization logic, and resilient retry/backoff patterns
• Develop messaging infrastructure supporting email, SMS, and chat delivery pipelines with throughput management, deliverability controls, suppression handling, and audit capabilities
• Build and enhance platform services supporting campaigns, workflows, contacts, reporting, knowledge systems, and other core business domains
• Design scalable Postgres schemas and data models optimized for transactional workloads and AI agent retrieval patterns
• Develop orchestration and event-driven workflows leveraging asynchronous services, queue management, and action dispatch systems integrated with CRM, calendar, and notification platforms

Essential Qualifications

• Equivalent of 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong focus on backend platform engineering, integrations, or data infrastructure
• Proven track record of owning and delivering significant backend systems or platform components in production environments
• Strong experience deploying and operating scalable production backend systems
• Advanced proficiency with Python and modern backend frameworks including FastAPI, Celery, and asynchronous or queue-based architectures
• Deep experience with PostgreSQL including schema design, query optimization, and production operations
• Experience working with large datasets and resolving real-world data quality challenges across heterogeneous systems
• Experience designing and maintaining integrations with third-party SaaS systems, including handling rate limiting, schema drift, retries, and partial failures
• Strong background in AWS cloud architecture and distributed systems
• Experience using modern AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor, or similar technologies
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
• Ability to operate autonomously while contributing within broader architectural direction

• Experience with Terraform, Kubernetes/EKS, Datadog, and GitLab
• Experience operating messaging infrastructure including SMTP, SMS aggregators, or chat platforms
• Experience building backend platforms consumed by AI agents or automated systems
• Experience with Redshift, DynamoDB, EventBridge, and Redis
• Background working within highly scalable, event-driven architectures
