Job summary

Akkodis is seeking a Platform Engineer for one of our clients in Dearborn, Michigan. The Senior Virtualization Engineer will help design, deploy, and operate VMware ESX environments and OpenShift Virtualization within a large enterprise.

Expect 4 days onsite and 1 day work from home, with a rate range of $45.00 to $55.00/hour. You will implement automation, monitor health, perform RCA, and collaborate with application teams to meet capacity and security goals.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of IT experience across enterprise environments.
• 8+ years in software development, infrastructure or platform engineering.
• Experience with VMware, Kubernetes-based infra, and OpenShift virtualization.
• Strong scripting/automation and capacity planning skills.
• Experience with monitoring, observability, and RCA in large-scale systems.

Job description

Akkodis is seeking a Platform Engineer for one of our clients in Dearborn, Michigan.

Rate Range: $45.00 to $55.00/hour; the rate may be negotiable based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.

The Senior Virtualization Engineer will be responsible for the engineering, deployment, administration, security, and ongoing support of enterprise virtualization hosting solutions. This position supports large-scale infrastructure environments and application hosting needs utilizing VMware and OpenShift Virtualization (OSV).

The schedule is 4 days onsite and 1 day work work from home.

Please note, we are not able to work on C2C basis for this role.

Daily Activities

• Architect, design, deploy, administer, and support VMware and OpenShift Virtualization environments.
• Manage the full lifecycle of virtualization technologies, including planning, design, implementation, maintenance, upgrades, security vulnerability patching, and decommissioning.
• Engineer, test, document, and maintain procedures related to platform operations, monitoring, logging, security, and disaster recovery.
• Support large-scale deployments of virtualization technologies across enterprise environments.
• Support server hardware management interfaces and firmware testing for enterprise server platforms.
• Conduct capacity planning and forecasting for compute, virtual machines, memory, storage, and network resources.
• Analyze infrastructure utilization trends and recommend scaling, consolidation, and optimization opportunities.
• Collaborate with application teams and stakeholders to forecast future infrastructure demand and capacity requirements.
• Develop and maintain capacity models and reporting to support infrastructure planning.
• Develop automation solutions, including scripts and playbooks, for configuration changes, virtual machine management, auditing, remediation, and integration with ticketing systems.
• Apply Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles to improve platform stability, availability, performance, and operational efficiency.
• Manage and audit role-based access controls, namespaces, and resource quotas for CPU, disk, and storage.
• Implement and maintain end-to-end observability solutions, including infrastructure monitoring, logging, and tracing.
• Develop capabilities to identify abnormalities, monitoring gaps, and potential platform health issues.
• Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to identify and resolve complex issues within large-scale compute environments.
• Proactively monitor virtual machine health, resource utilization, performance metrics, and unusual activity that could indicate configuration or security issues.
• Provide technical consultation to application teams requiring virtualization solutions.
• Design, implement, and validate dedicated virtualization clusters and virtual machine solutions for critical or complex application requirements.
• Create and maintain internal technical documentation and customer-facing documentation to support self-service capabilities and communicate platform functionality.
• Provide L1 through L3 technical support for infrastructure and environmental issues.
• Participate in scheduled after-hours and weekend support approximately once per month.

Skills and Experience

• 10+ years of professional Information Technology experience.
• 8+ years of software development, infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, or closely related technical experience.
• Practical experience with at least two coding or scripting languages, or advanced proficiency with one language.
• Strong experience with VMware virtualization technologies and VMware ESX environments.
• Strong understanding of Kubernetes concepts and container-based infrastructure.
• Understanding of OpenShift Virtualization or similar Kubernetes-based virtualization technologies.
• Experience with enterprise infrastructure, cloud infrastructure, and platform support.
• Strong understanding of virtualization technologies and concepts, including VMware and KVM.
• Experience with Linux administration and networking fundamentals.
• Proficiency with scripting and automation for infrastructure and platform management.
• Experience developing automation for configuration management, virtual machine administration, auditing, remediation, and other operational tasks.
• Experience with monitoring, observability, and logging solutions.
• Experience conducting Root Cause Analysis and troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues across multiple technology layers.
• Knowledge of cloud architecture and infrastructure architecture principles.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps methodologies.
• Experience with Git-based source control and development workflows.
• Experience with change management processes in enterprise IT environments.
• Knowledge of role-based access control, access management, and infrastructure security concepts.
• Experience with platform capacity planning, resource utilization management, and infrastructure optimization.
• Strong technical analysis, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate with technical teams and business stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently, identify opportunities for improvement, and proactively evolve infrastructure services.

Education

• Minimum Associate's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
