Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients requiring plastic and reconstructive surgical services.
  • Provide immediate and delayed breast reconstruction following oncologic surgery.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient goals, clinical findings, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
  • Consult with patients regarding reconstructive options, anticipated outcomes, and postoperative expectations.
  • Provide comprehensive preoperative, operative, and postoperative care, including wound management and follow-up treatment.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinics, tumor boards, case conferences, and care planning meetings.
  • Collaborate with breast surgical oncologists, surgical oncologists, dermatologists, and other specialists to develop coordinated treatment plans.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with organizational, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
  • Remain current on advances in plastic and reconstructive surgical techniques and technologies.

Job Summary

The Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon provides comprehensive plastic and reconstructive surgical care with a primary focus on breast and oncologic reconstruction. This physician serves as an integral member of Mary Washington Healthcare's multidisciplinary cancer program, collaborating closely with breast surgery, surgical oncology, dermatology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and head and neck surgery specialists to provide coordinated, patient-centered care. The physician is responsible for evaluating patients, developing individualized reconstructive treatment plans, performing surgical procedures, and providing preoperative and postoperative care.

The Plastic Surgeon will provide a full spectrum of reconstructive and medically necessary plastic surgery services, with the opportunity to perform elective cosmetic and aesthetic procedures based on patient demand, provider expertise, and practice needs

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients requiring plastic and reconstructive surgical services.
  • Provide immediate and delayed breast reconstruction following oncologic surgery.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient goals, clinical findings, and multidisciplinary recommendations.

  • Provide comprehensive preoperative, operative, and postoperative care, including wound management and follow-up treatment.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary clinics, tumor boards, case conferences, and care planning meetings.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other specialists to develop coordinated treatment plans.

Surgical Responsibilities
  • Perform immediate and delayed breast reconstruction procedures.
  • Perform implant-based breast reconstruction.
  • Perform autologous tissue reconstruction procedures.
  • Perform breast reduction and mastopexy procedures.
  • Perform nipple-areola reconstruction procedures.
  • Perform revision breast reconstruction procedures.
  • Perform fat grafting and other restorative procedures.
  • Provide reconstructive surgical support for: Breast oncology surgery
  • Gastrointestinal oncology surgery
  • Colorectal surgery
  • Melanoma surgery
  • Head and neck oncology surgery
  • Perform additional reconstructive procedures consistent with training, experience, and granted privileges.
Program development and Multidisciplinary Care
  • Actively participate in the health system's multidisciplinary breast clinic.
  • Participate in bi-monthly breast tumor conferences and multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Support ongoing growth and development of reconstructive services within the Oncology Service Line.
  • Collaborate with breast surgical oncologists, surgical oncologists, dermatologists, and other referring providers.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and clinical excellence efforts.
  • Foster effective working relationships across departments to enhance patient access and care coordination.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
Required
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an accredited Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency or Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency.
Preferred
  • Fellowship training in Microsurgery, Breast Reconstruction, Reconstructive Microsurgery, or Oncoplastic Surgery.
  • DIEP flap reconstruction experience.
  • Experience in breast and oncologic reconstruction.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary cancer care environment.
  • Experience with implant-based and autologous breast reconstruction techniques.
Licensure and Certifications
Required
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Plastic Surgery through a recognized certifying board.
  • Current, unrestricted Virginia medical license or eligibility for Virginia licensure.
  • Current DEA registration and controlled substance prescribing authority, as required.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification

Base Compensation: $600,000. Eligible for performance and productivity bonuses.
