Job description

The Water Recovery Plant is seeking a Building & Equipment Plant Mechanic with extensive relevant experience to coordinate and perform repair and maintenance of heavy industrial machinery, preferably water treatment and pumping equipment. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment to ensure efficient operation for 24/7 plant operations. Normal working hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, with rotating call duty during nights, holidays, and weekends, for which additional compensation is provided.

This position is part of a progression plan: Plant Mechanic Apprentice, Plant Mechanic, Plant Mastercraft Mechanic. The advertised position is for the Plant Mechanic Apprentice; however, compensation will be based on qualifications and experience. Applicants with relevant qualifications and experience may be considered for higher levels. The starting pay for the Plant Apprentice is $20/hr.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Inspect equipment and machinery to determine maintenance needs.
  2. Replace and perform general maintenance on packing, bearings, seals, sleeves, and worn parts on pumps, motors, valves, air compressors, chemical feeders, etc.
  3. Perform general plumbing repairs and installations.
  4. Repair small engines.
  5. Adjust shaft alignments and couplings.
  6. Install and replace water treatment equipment, piping, and high-pressure lines.
  7. Weld and fabricate repair parts.
  8. Perform preventive maintenance on various equipment.
  9. Maintain plant and pumping station buildings and grounds.
  10. Make minor electrical repairs.
  11. Assist contractors in installing new equipment and machinery.
  12. Maintain records of work and purchases.
  13. Maintain inventory of spare parts and fittings.
  14. Rotate on-call coverage with other employees to respond to emergencies after hours and on weekends.
  15. Work around heights, confined spaces, and hazardous chemicals.
Additional Duties
  • Other duties to provide service to citizens may be assigned.
  • In case of emergencies or a declared State of Emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED and considerable mechanical maintenance experience in heavy industrial machinery repair, preferably in water or wastewater treatment and pumping equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Ownership or approved access to a telephone.
  • Relevant background checks must be completed and approved.
  • Must complete IS100 and IS700 NIMS training within 90 days of employment; higher levels may be required.
