Title: Plant Engineering Technician I

Department: Plant Engineering

St. Edward's University of Austin, Texas invites applications for the position of Plant Engineering Technician I. The Plant Engineering Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the university's heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. This role also supports general building maintenance, including commercial kitchen equipment, basic plumbing, and electrical systems, ensuring a safe and functional environment for all building occupants.

For Consideration, Candidates Must Have The Following Qualifications
  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience: A minimum of three (3) years combined vocational school training and paid practical experience in the care and maintenance of air-conditioning and heating equipment.
  • BAS Proficiency: Demonstrated experience operating Building Automation Systems (BAS) to monitor building setpoints, schedules, and alarms.
  • Work Order Management: Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or similar digital platform to receive, document, and close out work orders.
  • Specific Knowledge: Proven experience with troubleshooting control devices, including pneumatic systems.
  • EPA Universal Certification (Section 608) for handling refrigerants.
  • Valid Driver's License.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Exposure: "Normal" working conditions for this position include frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals (refrigerants/cleaning solvents), and outside weather conditions.

  • Noise Level: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when working near mechanical plant equipment (chillers/boilers).
  • Safety & Compliance (OSHA):
  • Standards: All work must be performed in strict accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standards.
  • Protocols: The employee is required to utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, hazard communication, and confined space entry guidelines.

  • Lifting: Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally move heavier equipment with mechanical assistance.
  • Dexterity: Requires the manual dexterity to operate hand tools, power tools, and computer keyboards for BAS adjustments.
