Job description

Planning Technician – Roosevelt City, Utah

$45,000 – $65,000 per year DOE

Roosevelt City is seeking a motivated, service-minded Planning Technician to join our Community Development / Planning & Zoning team. This is an opportunity to build a rewarding municipal career in a collaborative environment where your work directly supports responsible growth, development, and the quality of life in our community.

Build Your Career with Roosevelt City

Working for Roosevelt City means being part of a team focused on serving residents and building a strong future for our community. As a Planning Technician, you'll work with residents, developers, contractors, businesses, and City departments while gaining valuable experience across planning, zoning, GIS, permitting, and land use. The Planning Technician is a great fit for someone who enjoys solving problems, helping people navigate processes, and seeing projects move from an idea to reality.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like?

No two days are quite the same for a Planning Technician. You may start your morning answering zoning questions, reviewing building permits for zoning compliance, or helping an applicant understand City requirements. From there, the Planning Technician may process conditional use permits, rezones, subdivisions, site plans, lot line adjustments, variances, and appeals.

The Planning Technician also prepares Planning Commission and City Council staff reports and agenda materials, conducts site inspections, maintains planning records, prepares public notices, and uses GIS to create maps and exhibits. You'll coordinate with engineering, public works, building inspection, fire, and utilities during development review and assist with updates to the General Plan and development code.

Work Schedule

The Planning Technician works Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., providing a consistent four-day workweek.

What You'll Bring

A successful Planning Technician must have a high school diploma or GED and a valid Utah driver's license. Knowledge in planning, geography, GIS, public administration, construction management, or a related field is preferred, along with one to three years of experience in planning, permitting, construction, GIS, engineering, or local government.

The ideal Planning Technician brings excellent customer service and communication skills, can interpret maps, plats, site plans, codes, and ordinances, and is comfortable using Microsoft Office and GIS software. Municipal planning or zoning experience, ArcGIS experience, knowledge of Utah's LUDMA, and experience preparing staff reports and public meeting materials are especially valuable.
