The City of Surprise Community Development Department is seeking a self-motivated, collaborative, and experienced Planner to fill the role of Planner II. Planners in this role collaborate with other planning professionals, city departments, residents, landowners, business owners, developers, and design professionals to develop high-quality proposals.
The ideal candidate will manage multiple priorities, work effectively in a fast-paced team environment, provide excellent customer service, possess strong writing skills, lead teams, and confidently present proposals to the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council. This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity.
Incumbents perform professional land use and urban planning tasks, including current and long-range planning activities such as urban design, landscape architecture, parks and open space planning, reviewing zoning and development applications, and coordinating special projects. Additional activities include research, analysis, report writing, customer service, and oral presentations to the public, boards, commissions, City Council, and City management. The role involves collaboration with county, state, and federal agencies, community groups, developers, and stakeholders to meet the City's economic development, land use, transportation, and housing goals. Planner II is distinguished from Planner I by the complexity, public relations challenges, independence, and creative demands of assigned projects.
Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field, and two years of professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that enables successful performance of essential duties. Additional education cannot substitute for experience.
