Job summary

Westside Library in Spartanburg County seeks a Planetarium Assistant, Grade 17, to help prepare for and present planetarium shows and STEAM van activities, maintain calendars, schedule outreach visits, and keep exhibits inviting and up to date.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, can present to individuals and large groups, troubleshoot minor equipment, and work both independently and with a small team.

Responsibilities

• Helps prepare for and present Planetarium shows and classes and off-site STEAM van activities.
• Maintains Planetarium calendar and requests for shows, classes, and external visits with other operators.
• Prepares and maintains Planetarium exhibits.
• Tracks and submits program statistics.
• Maintains an attractive and engaging Planetarium workspace environment.
• Operates basic functions of Planetarium shows and programs; serves as backup to instructors/director.
• Participates in department and committee meetings and online discussions.
• Attends training related to adult services and library work.
• Adheres to safety and security at all times.

JOB TITLE: Planetarium Assistant, Grade 17

LOCATION: The Planetarium at the Spartanburg County Public Libraries

DATE AVAILABLE: October 1, 2026

SALARY: $2,305 per month (Includes generous benefits package)

HOURS: 40 hours per week

Monday and Tuesday 11:15am to 8:15pm; Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 9amto 6pm, every 3 rd weekend (Saturdays 9:30-5:15 and Sundays12:15-5:15)

(Note: Must be flexible to accommodate schedule changes, maybe asked to work other times as needed.)

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Helps prepare for and present Planetarium shows and classes and off-siteSTEAM van activities
• Maintains Planetarium calendar and requests for Planetarium shows,classes, and external visits in conjunction with other operators of the STEAMvan
• Prepares and maintains Planetarium exhibits
• Tracks and submits program statistics
• Responsible for maintaining an attractive and engaging environmentin the Planetarium workspaces
• Responsible for basic operation of Planetarium shows and programsand serves as backup to Planetarium Instructors and Director of the Planetarium
• Participates in department meetings, assigned committee meetings,and online discussions
• Attends regular training related to adult services and otherlibrary work
• Remains aware of safety and security always

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination ofeducation and experience
• Proficiency, comfort, and experience presenting educationalprograms to individuals and large groups
• Experience in formal and informal education environments preferred
• Ability to troubleshoot minor equipment issues in a technicalenvironment
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
• Good time management skills and attention to detail
• Ability to take direction and work independently or in a small teamenvironment
• Proven experience in collaborating with others to provideappropriate service and programs for the public
