Job summary

Spartanburg County Public Library is seeking a Middle Tyger Children’s Assistant, Grade 19, to join the Middle Tyger Library team. The role involves planning and presenting story times, homeschool programs, and other youth activities for ages birth through 12, with a focus on early literacy and community outreach.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with children, strong communication skills, and comfort with technology.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, promotes and presents creative programs for children birth through age 12, including story times and summer reading activities.
  • Incorporates early literacy concepts into programs and environments for ages 0–5
  • Prepares deposits and program contracts, and tracks statistics
  • Engages the public during outreach events in local schools and communities
  • Maintains an attractive children’s area in the library
  • Performs circulation duties and processes new materials
  • Participates in Children’s Services meetings and online discussions
  • Provides excellent customer service for patrons of all ages
  • Attends training related to children’s services and maker space interests
  • Supports supervisor directives in their absence

LOCATION: Middle Tyger Library.

DATE AVAILABLE: October 1, 2026.

SALARY: $2,541 per month (Includes generous benefits package).

HOURS: 40 hours per week.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with children.

Schedule

Week A: Sunday 12:00pm-5:00pm;Monday Off; Tuesday 8:30am-6:00pm; Wednesday 11:00am-8:00pm; Thursday9:30am-7:00pm; Friday 9:30am-6:00pm; Saturday Off

Week B & C: Sunday Off; Monday8:30am-5:00pm; Tuesday 8:30am-6:00pm; Wednesday 11:00pm-8:00pm; Thursday9:30pm-7:00pm; Friday 9:30am-6:00pm

Week D: Sunday Off; Monday8:30am-5:00pm; Tuesday 8:30am-6:00pm; Wednesday 11:00am-8:00pm; Thursday9:30am-7:00pm; Friday Off; Saturday 8:30am-5:00pm

Note: Must be flexible to accommodate schedule changes, may be asked to work other times as needed.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, promotes andpresents creative programs that meet the needs of children, birth through age12, including story times, homeschool programs, and other special events andsummer reading activities
  • Incorporates the EveryChild Ready to Read concepts into programs and environments for children ages0-5
  • Prepares deposits andprogram contracts, requests purchase orders and tracks program statistics
  • Actively engages thepublic during community outreach programs in the local area schools, day caresor special events
  • Responsible formaintaining an attractive children’s area in the library
  • Performs circulationduties including check out, check in, and processing of new materials
  • Participates in regularChildren’s Services Committee meetings, online discussions, and book reviews
  • Provides superiorcustomer service when assisting patrons of all ages with information requests,reader’s advisory questions, computers, digital devices, and other libraryequipment
  • Attends regular trainingrelated to children’s services and other library work
  • Interest in STEM programming and Maker Space equipment
  • Supports supervisordirectives and assumes responsibility of building and staff in supervisor’sabsence
Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalentcombination of education and experience with children.
