Blackfield Associates are partnered with a global pharmaceutical manufacturer to support their search for a Piping Project Engineer to join their Indiana-based team on an initial 12-month contract. Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Piping Engineering.
• Experience in hygienic/pharma processing piping environments.
• Experience with orbital welding and welding quality documentation.
• Ability to interpret P&IDs, isometrics, and piping specifications.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering, installation, and commissioning of hygienic piping systems.
• Review and approve isometrics, P&IDs, weld maps, and materials specifications.
• Ensure piping meets ASME BPE and GMP requirements.
• Provide technical support to field construction teams on welding and passivation.
• Coordinate piping interfaces across process equipment, utilities, CIP/SIP systems, and automation.
• Verify weld quality through weld logs, inspections, NDE results, and weld procedure qualifications.
• Support pressure testing, flushing, chemical cleaning, passivation, and system turnover.
• Participate in design reviews, constructability assessments, and hazard evaluations.
• Monitor construction progress, field walkdowns, and ensure readiness for commissioning and qualification.
• Ensure turnover documentation is complete and compliant.

Job description

Blackfield Associates are currently partnered with a global pharmaceutical manufacturer to support their search for a Piping Project Engineer to join their project based in Indiana on an initial 12-month contract.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead engineering, installation, and commissioning activities for hygienic/sanitary process piping systems used in pharmaceutical API operations.
• Review and approve hygienic piping designs including isometrics, P&IDs, weld maps, and materials specifications to ensure compliance with sanitary design standards.
• Ensure all piping meets ASME BPE, GMP, and project-specific hygienic requirements
• Provide technical support to field construction teams on hygienic piping installation, weld quality, orbital welding requirements, passivation, and inspection expectations.
• Coordinate and resolve piping interface issues across process equipment, utilities, CIP/SIP systems, and automation.
• Verify hygienic weld quality through review of weld logs, borescope inspections, NDE results, and weld procedure qualifications.
• Support pressure testing, flushing, chemical cleaning, passivation, and system drying activities prior to turnover.
• Participate in design reviews, constructability assessments, and hazard evaluations related to process piping.
• Monitor construction progress, perform field walkdowns, support punch list development, and ensure readiness for commissioning and qualification.
• Ensure documentation for hygienic piping systems including turnover packages, weld traceability, materials certification, and inspection records is complete and compliant.

Experience Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Piping Engineering, or a related field.
• Sufficient piping engineering experience within pharmaceutical, biotech, food, or other regulated hygienic process environments.
• Experience with orbital welding, weld quality inspection, and documentation control for high-purity piping systems.
• Hands-on experience supporting installation, testing, cleaning, passivation, and commissioning of hygienic piping.
• Familiarity with GMP environments and regulatory expectations for clean manufacturing systems.
• Ability to interpret and develop engineering drawings, 3D models, P&IDs, isometrics, and piping specifications.
• Strong coordination and communication skills for working with multidisciplinary teams, vendors, and contractors.
• Ability to work onsite in a fast-paced construction setting while solving field-level piping issues efficiently.
