Job summary

Shirley Contracting Company in Northern Virginia seeks a skilled pipelayer to install and repair waterlines, sewers, and storm systems on various Virginia sites.

You will align pipes, seal joints, use lasers and transit levels, trench, and supervise others when needed. The role requires outdoor work year-round, safety focus, and reliable communication with crew and customers; typical start at 6:00–7:00 AM, with overtime possible.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year experience on a utility crew
• Working knowledge of shoring and excavation
• Ability to read cut/grade sheets
• Work in outdoor environments in all seasons
• Be comfortable working alongside heavy equipment and able to communicate with operators, workers and pedestrians
• Must pass pre-employment physical/drug screening

Responsibilities

• Install and repair waterline, sanitary sewer and storm sewer
• Align and position pipes to prepare them for joining
• Connect pipe pieces and seal joints
• Install and use lasers, grade rods, and transit levels
• Check slopes for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers
• Assist with the covering of pipes with earth or other materials
• Cut pipes to required lengths
• Dig trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools
• Grade and level trench bases, using tamping machines and hand tools
• Work in confined and enclosed spaces
• Willing to train others in pipe-laying and provide supervision
• Ensure the company’s health and safety culture, policies and requirements are met
• Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with customers and co-workers
