Job summary

Shirley Contracting Company in Northern Virginia seeks a Pipelayer for ongoing water, sewer trenching and pipe installation across multiple sites. You will align pipes, seal joints and assist with earth backfill, often working near heavy equipment and in outdoor conditions.

Required is at least 1 year on a utility crew, with ability to read cut/grade sheets and pass pre-employment physical and drug screening. Training others and supervising may be included as you gain experience.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year experience on a utility crew.
• Working knowledge of shoring and excavation.
• Ability to read cut/grade sheets.
• Must pass pre-employment physical/drug screening.
• Able to communicate with operators, workers and pedestrians.

Responsibilities

• Install and repair of waterline, sanitary sewer and storm sewer.
• Align and position pipes to prepare them for joining.
• Connect pipe pieces and seal joints.
• Install and use instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels.
• Check slopes for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers.
• Assist with the covering of pipes with earth or other materials.
• Cut pipes to required lengths.
• Dig trenches to required depths, by hand or using trenching tools.
• Grade and level trench bases, using tamping machines and hand tools.
• Work in confined and enclosed spaces.
• Willing to train others in pipe-laying and provide supervision.
• Ensure the company’s health and safety culture, policies and requirements are met.
• Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with customers and co-workers.
