Job description

Job Title: Pipefitter

Summary

Oversees and directs crew members to ensure daily tasks are carried out in a safe, timely, and efficient manner. Must be able to read isometric drawings, derive location, orientation, size, and diameter of piping or other equipment, and perform tasks involved in installing and maintaining piping systems. Responsibilities include layout, fabrication, assembly, installation, and maintenance of piping systems, pipe supports, fixtures, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for various systems such as steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and production and processing systems.

Responsibilities

  1. Selects type and size of pipe and related materials and equipment according to job specifications.
  2. Inspects worksite to identify obstructions.
  3. Plans installation sequence to avoid obstructions and coordinate with other workers.
  4. Cuts pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutter, torch, or pipe cutting machine.
  5. Threads pipe using threading machine.
  6. Bends pipe by hand or with bending tools and machines.
  7. Mounts pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceilings.
  8. Assembles and installs metal or nonmetal pipes and fittings using appropriate joints and tools.
  9. Secures pipes to structures with brackets, clamps, and hangers.
  10. Installs and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including piping and controls.
  11. Tests piping systems for leaks and observes gauges for indications of leaks.
  12. Welds pipe supports to structural steel members.
  13. May observe machinery to detect malfunctions and operate machinery for verification.
  14. Loads, transports, and unloads materials, tools, and equipment.
  15. Assists in lifting, positioning, and securing materials during installation.
  16. Performs minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
  17. Adheres to safety and project rules; respiratory protection may be required.
  18. Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
  • Make decisions based on measurable criteria.
  • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems.
  • Plan work and select proper tools.
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
  • Work at heights without fear.
  • Compare and see differences in the size, shape, and form of objects.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent preferred, with experience in the field or related area. Knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures within the field. Ability to plan work, delegate tasks, and exercise independent judgment. Reports to a site General Foreman and/or Site Manager.

Physical Requirements

  • Strength: Standing 60%, Walking 20%, Sitting 20%; lifting 50 lb., carrying 50 lb., pushing and pulling 70 ft-lb.
  • Climbing and balancing occasionally required.
  • Stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, and fingering with varying frequencies.
