Job description

Job Title: Pipefitter

This Pipefitter position is located in the Facility Maintenance Service Line at the Department of Veterans Affairs, VHA Connecticut, West Haven Campus, under the HVAC & Mechanical Pipe Shop Supervisor. The role involves modifying, maintaining, and repairing a variety of high, medium, and low-pressure piping systems.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will:

1. Cut, thread, and install pipe, hangers, pipe insulation, condensate tanks and pump assemblies, steam & hot water heating devices, heat controls, condensate traps, circulating pumps, radiators, on-demand and electric hot water heaters, and other devices.
2. Install, plumb, and maintain various lines including copper, cast & black iron, steel, brass, and corrosive-resistant plastics, along with drains, vents, fixtures, and equipment for food service and medical purposes.
3. Perform additional duties as needed related to pipefitting and maintenance.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Subject to background and suitability investigation.
• Designated and/or random drug testing may be required.
• Probationary period may apply.
• Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Experience: Demonstrated training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of the position. Evidence should be detailed in your resume. Applicants will be rated according to the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Those meeting the minimum requirements will be considered further; others will be ineligible. Eligibles are then rated against other job elements including equipment assembly, interpreting instructions, measurement and layout, technical practices, troubleshooting, tool maintenance, and ability to work independently.

Volunteer work and unpaid experience, including through programs like Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, are credited towards experience requirements, provided duties and hours are clearly indicated.

Note: A full year of work is considered 35-40 hours per week. Part-time experience will be credited proportionally. Clearly specify duties, responsibilities, and hours worked per week in each position to receive appropriate credit.
