Position Objective/Description:
Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a pipe loader.
Job Title:
Operator (Loader)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Understand and follow directions from supervisors regarding the required work area.
- Operate loader controls to lower and tilt buckets and drive forward to force the bucket into the bulk material.
- Ensure a sound understanding of issues involving ground disturbance.
- Operate loader on public or private roadways, maintaining proper awareness of surroundings.
- Transport aggregate or other materials safely and precisely.
- Maneuver loader and other heavy equipment safely on public or private roadways.
- Load, deliver, and dump materials in a safe and timely manner.
- Use levers to raise and tilt the bucket when filled, or to dump material.
- Maintain cleanliness and good condition of trucks.
- Perform daily inspections and safety checks on equipment; report defects and repairs.
- Perform minor maintenance such as cleaning, lubricating, and refilling equipment.
- Check fluid levels, maintain tire pressures, and change implements or attachments.
- Perform all duties in accordance with safety and security standards.
- Work closely with ground crew to achieve project objectives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of heavy equipment used in excavation, backfilling, and loading operations, including capacities and ground disturbance issues.
- Safe driving abilities and strict adherence to safety procedures.
- Able to listen, follow directions, and seek skill enhancement.
- Effective communication with supervisors and co-workers.
- General knowledge of road construction processes.
- Demonstrate a safety-first attitude and adherence to safety requirements.
- Display professionalism and courtesy to co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Must have reliable transportation and be able to travel to worksites.
Physical Demands:
- Constant physical effort, including extended sitting for at least 8 hours.
- Intermittent walking and standing on construction sites.
- Climbing, twisting, bending, kneeling, crouching.
- Reaching above shoulder level and pushing/pulling objects.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry at least 25 pounds regularly.
- Good coordination, vision, and response to oral instructions in noisy environments.
Education / Experience:
- High School diploma or GED.
- One year experience as a heavy equipment operator.
- One year experience operating a loader.
- Active Driver’s license.
Work Environment:
Works outdoors in extreme weather, near moving machinery, with exposure to chemicals, fumes, noise, and vibration.
