Overview

The Pipe Layer is responsible for preparing and laying pipe for storm drains, sanitary sewers, waterlines, and other pipelines. They ensure trenches are properly excavated, shored, and prepared for installation, grade and level trench foundations, align pipes, and check slopes using levels or lasers to meet specifications. The Pipe Layer also bed and backfill trenches properly, install pipes on grade and airtight as required, and support the Foreman in monitoring progress, safety, and efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate and set up equipment such as lasers, transits, grade rods, and line levels.
• Understand soil types, shoring techniques, and OSHA guidelines for trenching.
• Read survey stakes for cuts, fills, and elevations.
• Lay out pipe routes using blueprints and coordinate with the Foreman.
• Set up pipe lasers and establish lines and slopes.
• Read and interpret grade rods and tenths.
• Possess 24 months of construction experience.
• Use logic, reasoning, and math effectively for the job.
• Develop efficient methods to resolve roadblocks and adapt to soil conditions.
• Install good pipe on shallow grades with minimal rework and water.
• Install oversized structures as needed.
• Set the pace of the crew.

Requirements

• Valid driver’s license.
• Participation in pre-employment and random drug screening.
• Background screening clearance.
