Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory seeks an Advanced Reactor Thermal or Mechanical Analyst in the Reactor Engineering department. The role focuses on evaluating thermal and mechanical behavior of reactor components for advanced reactors under normal and hazard conditions.

Responsibilities include planning, calculations, and safety analyses, collaborating with internal teams and external designers, and supporting startup testing and safety documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering or related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program with 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering with 0–2 years of experience.
• Level 3 requires a Bachelor’s in nuclear or related engineering discipline with 5 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with 2 years.
• Experience with thermal and/or mechanical analysis using CFD or FEA.
• Experience with ANSYS, ABAQUS, STAR-CCM+, or MOOSE.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE clearance (US Citizenship).

Responsibilities

• Analyze thermal/mechanical behavior of structures, systems and components for advanced reactor demonstrations.
• Verify compliance with industry codes (ASME BPVC) and decompose design goals into requirements.
• Support confirmatory calculations and startup planning for safety analyses.
• Plan, schedule and track reactor analyses and startup testing activities.
• Collaborate with design and nuclear safety teams and external designers to support safety basis analyses.
• Contribute to technical decisions following sound engineering practices.
