Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory seeks an Advanced Reactor Thermal or Mechanical Analyst to join the Reactor Engineering team. The role covers analysis of thermal and mechanical behavior of structures for advanced reactors under normal, hazardous, and accident conditions.

You will verify compliance with industry codes and decompose goals into design requirements, plan confirmatory calculations, and coordinate startup testing to validate analyses and ensure safety.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering or related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program plus 2 years relevant experience, or Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree with 0 years relevant experience.
• Level 3 requires 5 years relevant experience or Advanced Degree.
• Relevant experience includes thermal and/or mechanical analysis by CFD or Finite Element Analysis.

Responsibilities

• Analyze the behavior of advanced reactor core components under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and accident conditions to support operating advanced nuclear reactors.
• Verify compliance of advanced reactor designs according to industry codes, such as ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code. Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements.
• Support, coordinate and perform confirmatory calculations and startup planning in thermal or mechanical analysis to support safety bases and facility development.
• Work includes planning, scheduling, and tracking of reactor analyses and startup testing to validate analytical work and ensure safety.
• Provide support to project and planning related to new reactor design and acceptance; communicate with design and nuclear safety organizations and DOE.
• Contribute to technical decisions based on sound engineering practices and Laboratory policies.

Job description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Advanced Reactor Thermal or Mechanical Analyst to work in our Reactor Engineering department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex with every other Friday off.

As a thermal or mechanical analyst will be responsible for analyzing thermal or mechanical behavior of structures, systems and components for advanced reactors under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and accident conditions for advanced reactor demonstration activities at INL.

Responsibilities Include:

• Analyze the behavior of advanced reactor core components under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and accident conditions to support operating advanced nuclear reactors.
• Verify compliance of advanced reactor designs according to industry codes, such as ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code. Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements.
• Supports, coordinates and performs confirmatory calculations and startup planning in areas of thermal or mechanical analysis to support development of facility and reactor specific safety basis supporting analyses.
• Work includes planning, scheduling, and tracking of reactor analyses and planning for startup testing and verification activities to validate analytical work and ensure safety.
• Responsible for providing support to project and planning activities related to new reactor design and acceptance, talking to design and nuclear safety organizations, working with external reactor designers and DOE (ID and HQ), and contributing organizations (e.g. structural analysis, criticality safety, radiation protection, etc.).
• Participate in the evaluation and resolution of complex engineering problems. Contribute to technical decisions based on sound engineering practices and in accordance with Laboratory policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements:

• Level 2: Bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering, or other related engineeringdiscipline from an ABET accredited program plus 2 years relevant experience, or Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other related degree with 0 years relevant experience.
• Level 3: Bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering, or other other related engineeringdiscipline from an ABET accredited program plus 5 years relevant experience, or Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other related degree with 2 years relevant experience..
• Relevant experience includes experience performing thermal and/or mechanical analysis by Computational Fluid Dynamics or Finite Element Analysis.
• Relevant experience with software codes such as ANSYS, ABAQUAS, STAR-CCM+, MOOSE, etc...
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred:

• Advanced degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering or directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution.
• Experience in nuclear fuels and materials, computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, primary design, analysis tools/methods, and closely related technical areas.

Job Information:

• The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($79,344 - $162,732)/ Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
• TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
• Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance.
