Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or equivalent from an approved medical school.
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S., its territories, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency training: Completion of an approved residency program leading to eligibility for board certification, approved by the VA Secretary.
  • For residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs, eligibility for appointment as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) exists, with specific scope and licensing conditions.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional Requirement: Adult Psychiatry board eligibility or certification.
  • Physical requirements include mainly walking, talking, driving, using telephone/computer, with light lifting (under 15 pounds), and hearing aid use as needed.
Duties
  • This is an open continuous announcement until September 5, 2025, with initial application cut-off on June 10, 2025, and subsequent biweekly cut-offs.
  • Eligible applications received after the initial cut-off will be considered as vacancies arise.

  • The staff psychiatrist provides psychiatric evaluations and treatments, collaborates with the healthcare team, and manages the Interventional Psychiatry program, including overseeing specific services.
  • Responsibilities include participating in clinical programs, practicing within privileges, complying with facility bylaws and policies, maintaining CME, record keeping, security, and participating in educational and quality assurance activities.
