Job description

Summary

The incumbent serves as a psychiatrist in the Mental Health Service. The psychiatrist performs general psychiatric assessment and treatment, including co-occurring substance use disorders assessment and treatment within a multi-disciplinary team. The psychiatrist works under the direction of their program manager and/or section chief.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable)
• Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school
• Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
• Completed residency training approved by the VA in an accredited core specialty program
• Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), with specific limitations
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Preferred: Board Certified or Board Eligible

Duties

• Provide evaluation and treatment for a diverse patient population, including veterans with complex medical and mental health needs
• Perform psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, integrative modalities, assessments, medication management, and crisis intervention
• Ensure practice complies with relevant policies, guidelines, and regulations
• Participate in team meetings, treatment planning, and multidisciplinary collaboration
• Order tests, interpret findings, and make treatment decisions
• May participate in supervision, teaching, on-call duties, and other related tasks
• Provide clinical documentation and utilize technology for record-keeping
• Support program needs, including coverage, training, and crisis response
• Engage in educational activities with medical students and other team members
• Other duties as assigned
