Job description

The incumbent serves as a psychiatrist in the Mental Health Service. The psychiatrist performs general psychiatric assessment and treatment, including co-occurring substance use disorders assessment and treatment within a multidisciplinary team. The psychiatrist works under the direction of their program manager and/or section chief.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA employees who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only if recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible)
• Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree from an approved medical school
• Current unrestricted medical license in the U.S.
• Completed residency training approved by the VA or equivalent
• Proficiency in spoken and written English

Preferred Experience: Board Certified or Board Eligible

Duties include:

• Providing evaluation and treatment for a diverse patient population, including veterans with complex medical and mental health conditions
• Performing psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and integrative mental health modalities
• Ensuring practice compliance with relevant policies, guidelines, and regulations
• Participating in team meetings, treatment planning, supervision, and teaching
• Ordering diagnostic tests, making treatment decisions, and documenting all clinical contacts
• Supporting program mission through staffing coverage, crisis management, and training
• Utilizing computer technology for documentation and communication
