Summary

The Birmingham VA Health Care System is recruiting for a Physician (Psychiatrist) in the Psychiatry section of the Mental Health Service located at the Huntsville VA Clinic. The Mental Health Service provides outpatient mental health services to Veterans and their families. It also includes inpatient consultation to medical and surgical floors and the emergency room.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be considered but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic standards.

Basic Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only if recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible)
• Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved medical school
• Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
• Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification
• Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), with specific scope of practice and supervision
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Physical requirements include moderate lifting, light carrying, walking, standing, hearing aid use permitted, and ability to perform rapid coordination

Duties

• Provide outpatient and inpatient psychiatric and addiction services to Veterans, including telehealth options
• Conduct diagnostic evaluations, psychiatric consults, medication management, and psychotherapy
• Provide biological treatments such as TMS if available
• Consultation liaison services for inpatients and ER patients
• Participate in back-up on-call rotations, primarily during evenings and weekends
• Work primarily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with potential for alternate schedules
