Summary

The Lt. Col. Luke Weathers – Jr. – VAMC in Memphis, TN is recruiting for a Hematology Oncology Physician to serve as a full-time Specialty Care physician. The position is accountable to the Chief of Specialty Care for assuring the most effective delivery of state‑of‑the‑art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy)
• Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school during the year of completion
• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
• Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board‑certification eligibility
• • For VA physicians in academic training programs, board certification may be required for faculty status. Approved residencies include:
  1. Residencies approved by ACGME or AOA listed for the year of completion.
  2. One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice.
  3. Non‑US residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States covering duties related to the position.
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA‑accredited programs and who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may be appointed on an intermittent basis; they are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged.

• Physical requirements: moderate lifting (15‑25 lbs), moderate carrying (15‑25 lbs), straight pulling (up to 2‑3 hours), pushing (up to 2‑3 hours), reaching above shoulder, walking (up to 1‑2 hours), kneeling (up to 1‑2 hours), repeated bending (up to 1‑2 hours), ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable, far vision correctable, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted).

Duties

• Clinical practice – supervising and teaching fellows, residents, and medical students in Hematology‑Oncology.
• Providing consultation in Hematology‑Oncology for diagnosis and treatment in inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Sharing attending call responsibilities with Hematology‑Oncology specialists for nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Rounding with the team of fellows, residents, and medical students in inpatient settings.
• Leading and managing the Hematology‑Oncology team (fellows, residents, medical students, pharmacists, mid‑level providers, etc.) on inpatient service or clinical setting.
• Administratively responsible to the Chief of Medicine.
• Clinical oversight provided by the collaborating physician – Section Chief – Hematology‑Oncology.
• Communicating with other healthcare providers to manage consults and additional services as required.
• Recognizing patients appropriate for referral or consultation with the collaborating physician.
• Consultations may occur through personal, telephone, or electronic media contact.
• A physician co‑signature of resident and student notes is required for admission history‑physical examination and admission plan for new patients as well as daily plan care/progress note for established patients.
• Discharge notes and discharge summaries will be electronically co‑signed.
• A discharge order may be written with the concurrence of the physician.
• Clinical activities may include clinical assessment and evaluation – inpatients and outpatients.
• Health care management of assigned veteran patients with acute and chronic illnesses.
• Ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic studies.
• Ordering consultation and referrals – inpatients and outpatients.
• Patient follow‑up as appropriate.
• Health promotion and disease prevention.
• Patient, family, and staff education and counseling.
• Clinical research (must have separate research approval).
• Administrative activities including performance improvement activities, research, and non‑clinical tasks as assigned.
• Exhibits leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and studies.
• Stays informed on developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education.
• Any other duties as assigned by the supervising physician or his/her designee relative to scope of practice.

• Pay: Competitive salary – annual performance bonus – regular salary increases.
• Paid Time Off: 50‑55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave – 13 days of sick leave – 11 paid federal holidays per year and possible 5‑day paid absence for CME).
• Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contribution by VA.
