Summary

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the largest integrated health care system in the United States – providing comprehensive medical, surgical, and mental health services to over 9 million enrolled Veterans. It is a vital branch of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements

• United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy)
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from an approved VA school
• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or D.C.
• Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification, or
• One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME/AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full license, or
• Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. under a full license, with duties related to the position (U.S. fellowships count as creditable training), as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and are appointed on an intermittent basis only.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Physical requirements: moderate lifting (15‑44 lb), moderate carrying (15‑44 lb), straight pulling (1 hr), reaching over shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (≈ 5 hrs), standing (≈ 4 hrs), kneeling (≈ 1 hr), repeated bending (≈ 4 hrs), both legs required, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision correctable at 13–16 in to Jaeger 1–4, far vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other, mental/emotional stability.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care for inpatients and outpatients with oncologic or hematologic conditions.
• Deliver patient‑centered medical care using both art and science, ensuring high‑value, cost‑effective, team‑based care.
• Utilize palliative and hospice services and principles when indicated.
• Tutor medical students, residents, and other rotating students, and supervise PAs and NPs.
• Participate in clinical research and other academic activities with VA and affiliated institutions.
• Engage in hospital and medical staff activities: accreditation, quality assessment, quality improvement, committee assignments, EPRP, lean, ORYX, HEDIS, SAIL measures, etc.
• Follow VA consult‑management and order‑set processes, document in CPRS, and comply with the VA electronic health record system.
• Collaborate with multiple services—including community care, prosthetics, medical administration, records, and group practice—and other duties as assigned, including weekday and weekend call.
• Work schedule: Full time, 8:00 am–4:30 pm Monday–Friday, subject to change based on service needs.
