Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
• Residency training: physicians must have completed an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, or meet one of the alternative residency and practice pathways listed below
• Alternative pathways:
  • (1) Residency or fellowship approved by ACGME or AOA in the year completed
  • (2) One year of post‑medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA, followed by two years of independent practice in the United States
  • (3) Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the United States, with duties related to the position
• Exceptions: Residents enrolled in approved residency programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis.
• PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged. They have a scope of practice that allows certain restricted duties under supervision.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical requirements: walking, sitting, talking, driving, use of telephone, light lifting and carrying under 15 pounds. Stress tolerance is required.

Duties

• This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Eligible candidates must submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment.
• EDRP award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office.
• Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
• Chief of Hematology/Oncology responsibilities include: administrative and patient care for both outpatient and inpatient services; leading and supporting facility performance measures to optimize employee engagement, patient experience, and outcomes.
• Provides leadership and guidance to clinical and administrative staff, complying with Medical Center policies and medical‑staff bylaws.
• Oversees day‑to‑day functions of the Hematology and Oncology section, supervising physicians, nurse practitioners, fellows, and residents.
• Diagnoses and manages blood‑related disorders such as anemia, leukemia, and hemophilia; and oncologic diseases including solid and endocrine tumors.
• Administers specialized therapies such as blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants; orders chemotherapy and biologic infusions.
• Monitors treatment effectiveness and adjusts therapy as needed.
• Collaborates with other healthcare professionals, including oncologists and hematopathologists.
• Participates in clinical trials and research studies.
• Manages daily operations of the section, including inpatient consultations, outpatient clinical areas, and inpatient units.
• Optimizes operational metrics such as productivity mapping, bookability, and labor allocation.
• Ensures timely completion of consults, encounters, training, credentialing, chart reviews, and mandatory trainings.
• Maintains compliance with medical‑staff bylaws and record‑keeping requirements.
• Provides oversight to medical students and residents in alignment with the academic mission.
• Completes tasks assigned by direct supervisor and participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
• Attends medical‑staff meetings and serves on committees as assigned.
