Job description

Summary

This position is a continuous open announcement that will remain open until September 30, 2026. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications is the first of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals until the positions are filled.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements specified in the announcement. Candidates pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Existing VA physicians who met the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are considered to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified citizens can be recruited).
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent allopathic/osteopathic degree from a VA‑approved school in the year the degree was earned.
• Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
• Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical and mental ability to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Mechanical aid or prosthesis may compensate for specific impairments if they do not preclude essential functions.

Qualifications – Special Conditions

• Physician residents currently enrolled in an accredited residency may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) under specified conditions (intermittent, supervised, non‑privileged).
• Surgery residents in gap years may also qualify as PRPs.
• Exceptional cases may be considered by the Facility Director with approval from the VISN Director.

Duties

• Provide primary care and specialty health services, including mental health, physical therapy, and spinal cord injury treatment, to patients at the Augusta Veterans Health Care System.
• Consult and follow up on medical subspecialty patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Establish and maintain professional relationships with clinicians, staff, and community‑based outpatient clinics.
• Diagnose, treat, and follow up oncology patients; complete documentation and coding accurately.
• Triage and prioritize oncology consult requests for timely care.
• Conduct telemedicine visits for patients in outlying clinics.
• Perform administrative tasks such as peer reviews, Compensation and Pension evaluations, and ongoing professional practice evaluations.
• Coordinate care at VA or non‑VA referral centers as needed.
• Participate in staff meetings, process‑improvement teams, and workgroups.
• Complete required continuing medical education (CME) to maintain oncology and licensure competency.
• Complete mandatory VA trainings (HIPAA, Privacy, Security, etc.) in a timely manner.
• Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (subject to change).
