Job summary

HonorHealth's Gastroenterology team in Peoria seeks a Physician Specialist to provide comprehensive GI care in both the office and hospital settings. The physician will deliver evidence-based gastroenterology services, participate in quality initiatives, mentor staff, and collaborate with referring physicians to ensure seamless patient care.

ACLS certification and Board certification/eligibility in Internal Medicine and GI are required.

  • Functions as a physician performing gastroenterology duties in the office and hospital settings.
  • Participates in establishing GI outpatient clinic, laboratory, and opportunities to expand GI services.
  • Develops treatment protocols, clinical pathways, quality standards and best practices in GI medicine.
  • Leads collaboration with department leadership and community physicians to ensure continuity of care.
  • Participates in recruitment, mentorship, and departmental committee activities.
  • Educates residents, medical students, and nurses; supports CME planning.
  • Engages in GI-related research with leadership to improve patient care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
JOB SUMMARY

Functions as a physician performing the duties of a gastroenterologist. The physician provides comprehensive evidence based care to a designated patient population, providing gastroenterology services to patients in the medical office setting as well as to hospital patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis.
Physician is accountable for the delivery of quality measures that will provide excellence in personalized healthcare, and will provide communication to referring physicians to maintain a continuum of care for all patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Clinical and Regulatory Compliance: Practices gastroenterology incorporating established quality standards. Participates in the gastroenterology call schedule for Thompson Peak and Shea campuses. Collaborating with the TPK Administration and other medical staff leadership to develop a GI outpatient clinic and laboratory and identify new opportunities to expand GI services. Developing treatment protocols, clinical pathways, quality standards and best practices in the overall clinical practice of inpatient and outpatient GI medicine. Working with the respective departmental leadership establishing standards for accepting patients into GI service. Becoming actively engaged in the TPK peer review process. Participation in regularly scheduled Medicine and other staff committees that require collaboration with the Services. Meeting with consulting and referring community physicians to determine the most effective communication processes to achieve the highest level of continuity of care. Collaborates with the Medical Director to provide fiscal accountability for the service. Participates in establishing a positive rapport with the community based physicians, emergency department, the intensive care units, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, respiratory therapy and other appropriate service areas. Collaborates with Case Management and the Clinical Documentation Specialists. Utilizes Medical Director when necessary in difficult situations. Collaborates with the Medical Director to identify new opportunities to expand the Gastroenterology services in collaboration with administration and community physicians. Complete understanding of and adherence to EMTALA regulations. Compliant with all HonorHealth Medical Staff bylaws, rules, regulations, and policies. Complies with documentation standards for all medical care rendered. Participates and complies with all patient safety indicators.
  • Leadership: Participates in the recruitment and retention of physicians. Facilitates and supports the mentoring of other physicians, nurses, pharmacist and other healthcare professionals. Creates a climate for professional practice with other disciplines. Supports the vision and values of the organization. Attends and participates in Departmental Committee meetings.
  • Education: Plans, coordinates, facilitates and participates in educational programs dealing with gastroenterology care. With direction of the Medical Director, may participate with CME planning for the Hospital. Participates with the Director of Medical Education and Medical Director of Academic Affairs to assure appropriate teaching opportunities for residents and medical students. Participates in the education of nurses and other ancillary professionals.
  • Research: Participates in research activities within the gastroenterology program for the purpose of improving the quality of care in the Program. Collaborates with the Vice President for Research and the Medical Director to identify research opportunities associated with gastroenterology.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
  • Graduate of an accredited Internal Medicine and fellowship training in gastroenterology.
EXPERIENCE
  • Other Recent direct acute care clinical experience. Preferred
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Certification Required
  • Board Certified Physician - Certification or Board Eligible physician in Internal Medicine and gastroenterology. Required
