Job description

Summary

The VA San Diego Healthcare System is seeking an experienced Psychiatrist to serve as Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health and Chief of Psychiatry. Reporting directly to the Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health, the incumbent will lead a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary team dedicated to delivering high-quality psychiatric care to our nation's Veterans. Qualified applicants will be forwarded at regular intervals until the position is filled.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled. Current VA-employed physicians who met previous qualification standards at initial appointment are deemed qualified.

Basic Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only if recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible)
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school
• Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
• Completed residency training in an accredited program leading to eligibility for board certification
• English proficiency
• Board Certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

Additional Requirements:

• Academic record suitable for appointment as an associate or full professor, eligible through UC San Diego School of Medicine
• Preferred experience includes acute and intensive psychiatry, VHA experience, program management, research, and quality improvement initiatives

Major Duties

• Provide clinical oversight for Psychiatry Service physicians and providers
• Lead comprehensive psychiatric services including outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and neuromodulation
• Oversee training programs for UC San Diego residents and trainees
• Balance administrative, academic, and clinical responsibilities (10-40% clinical time)
• Guide performance improvement aligned with VASDHS goals
• Supervise staff and foster collaboration across departments
• Support VA research activities and academic advancement
• Work schedule: 7:30 am - 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday
