Summary
At the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center, the vascular surgeon serves as a member of the organized medical staff, functioning within the Medical Staff Bylaws and other rules of the Veterans Health Administration. Clinical privileges are established and approved through the Professional Standards Board at the Medical Center.
Qualifications
To qualify, applicants must meet the basic and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending training or licensing requirements may be considered for referral and tentative selection, but employment is contingent on meeting all requirements. Existing VA physicians who initially qualified under previous standards are deemed to meet current standards.
- Citizenship: U.S. citizenship required; non-citizens only if recruitment of qualified citizens is not feasible.
- Education: MD or equivalent from an accredited school.
- License: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
- Residency: Completion of approved residency training leading to eligibility for board certification, approved by the VA.
- Board Certification: Required for the Chief of Vascular Surgery position.
- Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Physical Requirements: As per VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Duties
- Serve as the clinical expert for all vascular services, supervising surgeons, APPs, and technicians.
- Establish operational policies, procedures, and work schedules to ensure timely veteran care.
- Coordinate vascular clinics and collaborate with other service lines to meet veterans' comprehensive needs.
- Develop business plans and workload analyses to support staffing and expansion.
- Work with interdisciplinary teams to provide high-quality patient care, adhering to VA and Joint Commission standards.
- Evaluate care quality as part of the medical center's quality management program.
- Participate in medical center, VISN, and national meetings related to vascular services.
- Supervise students and residents in vascular services.
- Perform clinical duties including surgeries, inpatient rounds, ER visits, and outpatient care.
- Engage in surgical quality improvement initiatives.
- Manage all aspects of clinical care, including emergencies and inpatient wards.
- Coordinate patient assessments, service recovery, and medical opinions.
- Oversee medical student and resident training within vascular services.
- Manage case prioritization, procedural wait times, and documentation standards.
- Conduct FPPE/OPPE reviews and staff performance evaluations.
- Collaborate with the University of Pennsylvania on surgical candidate selection.
- Perform invasive and surgical procedures, order diagnostic tests, and consult with specialists.
- Ensure all activities comply with VA, Joint Commission, and other standards.
- Work as part of a team with physicians, nurses, and support staff.
- Utilize computer systems for documentation, orders, and consultations.
