Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be tentatively referred and selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements are deemed to meet the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only when recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible)
  • Degree of MD or equivalent from an approved school
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
  • Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME, AOA, or approved non-U.S. programs with verified practice)
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and appointed on an intermittent or fee basis
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Physical requirements include repetitive movements, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and moving patients and equipment
Duties
  • Manage advanced heart failure patients, with fellowship training preferred
  • Participate in inpatient and outpatient care, teaching, and research in cardiology
  • Apply national and VA guidelines for patient management
  • Supervise trainees, including residents and fellows
  • Perform procedures such as echocardiography, right heart catheterizations, stress testing, Holter monitoring, and arrhythmia management
  • Assist with LVAD and heart transplant evaluations and co-manage post-transplant and post-LVAD patients
  • Engage in educational activities and patient evaluation
  • Serve on committees, participate in quality assurance, and ensure compliance with standards
  • Utilize telehealth and electronic consultation to improve access
  • Maintain professional competency and participate in facility programs
  • Work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with potential calls during weekends, evenings, and holidays
